Quadtones: New Cone Quadtone Set
by George DeWolfe
Jon
Cone has just released his long-awaited ConeTech Piezography®BW Quadtone
inkset. The kit includes four Quadtone inks, a printer driver, and a well-produced
manual that support the EPSON 3000. Many quadtone printers will be excited
about this product because it eliminates the worst problem in working
with the 3000 - dots in the highlights. By overlapping the four quadtones
carefully and combining the ink dilution and driver algorithm, Cone has
successfully created continuous tone black-and-white archival quality.
All work is carried out in grayscale.
Included in the driver are profiles for printing many of the popular fine
art papers, including Somerset Velvet, Somerset Enhanced, Concord Rag,
Arches, and others. These profiles are very accurate, even to the point
of having to readjust your black-and-white point in Photoshop only slightly
to get just the desired result. In addition, one must readjust the print
head alignment for each different thickness of paper, instead of the old
method of adjusting it with copy paper. The driver also includes a nonspecific
unsupported profile mechanism for media not available in the ready-made
profile box.
The inks have a slightly warm color, closer to Agfa Portriga Rapid photographic
paper than the MIS Quadtones, which are closer to Ilford Galarie. I found
that by using Genuine Fractals to boost the resolution, I can make 16
x 20 prints from 4 x 5 negatives with these new inks and driver that are
indistinguishable from silver photographs. You will be amazed, pleased,
and excited by Jon Cone's Piezography®BW inkset.
